The art instructor will instruct classes for artists in an effort to support the artists with their goals. Assist artists in the studio through mentoring within an area of expertise and guide their art-making processes. This is a very rewarding position, offering ample self-direction and opportunity for input. The art instructor will be a part of a highly creative and dynamic team of community-focused staff working in an active art studio as well as in the community. The art instructor will have an opportunity to contribute on many levels to the growth of the program and the artists. The art instructor will work out of the E. Oregon Studio and/or the Lancaster City Studio.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
Accountable to the studio manager. Responsible for creating lessons plans in alignment with Individual Support Plans (ISP). Work in a team setting to complete studio projects while sharing specialized art skills with individuals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Art degree/art instruction background desired, but other relevant experience may meet expectations.
B. Respect for Friendship Community’s mission and values.

E. Willingness and ability to respond to the growth of the program and gallery.
RESPONSIBILITY:
A. Demonstrate a respectful, positive attitude that promotes service excellence to artists, fellow team members, families, and / or the general public.
B. Prepare lesson plans for artists that can be “themed” projects, classes that center on the use of a particular medium – as they take into consideration the varying skill levels of the artists and accommodate the projects according to varying skill sets, utilizing various techniques. These lesson plans should be centered to help meet the goals of the artists listed in their ISP, or that are vocalized by the artist or communicated by their Supports if the artist cannot articulate them directly.
C. Share specialized art skills with artists to help teach basic strategies, such as composition, professionalizing work, and self-presentation as artists, as well as fostering the artistic potential of the program.
D. Increase understanding and develop competence when working with individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism.
E. Communicate knowledge of the Friendship Community and the gallery mission to visitors/customers.
F. Complete daily service notes on all individuals assigned to your ratio in a manner which meets licensing expectations.
G. Communicate effectively and confidently to class participants and other groups. Provide direction for volunteers who assist during class time.
H. Be part of a team and design creative projects and lessons to be carried out in the studio. Actively engage participants in skill development, while maintaining instructor to artist ratios. Prepare for classes and facilitate class clean up with artists and other instructors.
I. Attend staff meetings, in-services and other required trainings and read the minutes of those meetings.
J. Observe and support the individuals’ health and safety. May be required to administer medications upon necessary trainings. Changes in health or behavior will be communicated or documented for the studio manager, day services coordinator, or director of operations to assess the individuals’ overall wellbeing.
K. Provide transportation to, and support individuals participating in Community Participation Supports (CPS) to expand the meaningful opportunities for community integration and community living for individuals.
L. Assist in the daily cleaning of the studio space and bathrooms. Assist individuals with personal care needs, including toileting. All other duties as assigned.
WORK SCHEDULE:
This is a part-time position, which includes occasional special events; days will vary but the hours will be 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

COMPENSATION:
$14.50/hour
